He worked in a bank in Meesig (sp?), Michigan; after he got tuberculosis, he moved to Rogers City and farmed & lumbered. Source: Interview with Viola Schaedig (Primary Enclosure File #47) maybe Meesig or Messig was the bank name/owner instead?]
Was a banker in Detroit. Source: Interview with John & Velma Claus (Primary Enclosure File #49)
In or around 1924 (when his son John was 6), he moved the family from the farm into Rogers City because Judge Wilcox talked him into running for County Treasurer. (He had been a banker in Detroit and had gone to college at Ferris Institute--old Benjamin Ferris himself was teaching there at the time. Then he got tuberculosis and moved back to Presque Isle County.) They rented a house on the far side of Marvin Claus' place; Arnold was born there. Source: Interview with John W. Claus (Claus Enclosure File #C2)
He met his wife in Presque Isle County. He bought the farm [on the south side of Noffze Hwy.] with money borrowed from Old Bill Trapp who ran the saloon; the farm cost $600. The farm had already been lumbered off. He built the house, then moved the family onto the farm. With the neighbors' help, he built the barn & the other buildings. He worked at lumbering in the winter. He raised grain & wheat, and hay to feed the couple of cows he had for milk. He also had a couple teams of horses for logging. Source: Interview with John W. Claus (Claus Enclosure File #C2)
He & his wife were members at the Hawks church (now Hope?). They sometimes went to Pastor Schmidt, who was Ohio Synod, but the family belonged to "the other one", where Pastor Schoenow was and his son was afterwards. They family would walk across the field and come out by the red barn by Brietzke's place, and then walk down the railroad track. Source: Interview with John W. Claus (Claus Enclosure File #C2)
The children would ride the cutter (a small sleigh) hitched to one horse that was like a racehorse; the other horses were heavy & strong. The family had a few chickens and a dog named Rocky. Source: Interview with John W. Claus (Claus Enclosure File #C2)
