- Notes:
Anna Bertha Caroline apparently was left behind in Germany when the rest came over, and then joined them in America c. 1881 (maybe as early as c. 1874). [The date discrepancy is caused by conflicting reports: One source says Bertha was 6 when she came to the U.S. (Interview with Lilly Mertz, Primary Enclosure File #47), which would be 1874. Another says she was left behind and immigrated when she was 13 (Interview with Marie (Danbert) Frye, Claus Enclosure File #C31), which would be 1881.]
Her parents came over and left her in Germany, then later sent for her. Bertha was 13 when she came over alone; 3 weeks' trip from Germany; she cried & cried [about being left behind]. Source: Interview with Marie (Danbert) Frye (Claus Enclosure File #C31)
For the 1920 Federal Census, both her daughter Louise and her daughter Lilly stated that she was born in Mecklenburg.
Birthplace is hard to read in some records: Koeslin or Kaeslin; her confirmation record has it as Boesin.
Koeslin was a town & Kreis in eastern Pomerania (now Poland).
She met John Danbert through her friend Clara Voodre. [Before they married,] Bertha worked for a family in Detroit doing mending & child care. Source: Interview with Marie (Danbert) Frye (Claus Enclosure File #C31)
