A picture of him appeared in the Presque Isle County Advance, July 30, [18]71. Source: Interview with Martha Prell (Primary Enclosure File #48)
On 15 December 1879, he bought 124.60 acres of land from the U.S. government as a land patent. It was the W fractional half of the SE fractional quarter and the SE fractional quarter of the SW fractional quarter of Section 33 in Township 34 North, Range 5 East. (Bureau of Land Management <http://glorecords.blm.gov/>, homestead certificate #663, application #1272.) He apparently bought some additional land in the same Section from the U.S. government through John M. Farland (Presque Isle County land records, book 3, p. 124. Claus Enclosure File #C31)
"They arrived in New York on 14 May 1872 on the ship Madgalene. The ship register (Germans to America, Vol. 27, page 69) lists August, Wilhelmine and a son, Friedrich age 1, but not their daugher, Augusta Friederike. (This is assumed to be a clerical error.) A daughter, Mary, was born in Detroit, Michigan, on May 20, 1872, just one day after the family arrived in Detroit - and just 5 days after arriving in New York from Germany. Between 1872 and 1874 they traveled by ship to Rogers City, Michigan. They began a homestead (farming) in Belknap Township, at a location called South Rogers Corner."

"(The following account was written by Iva Mielke Schalk for Mona Pelkey in 1989.)
"On May 19, 1872, Henry Sr, and [wife] Caroline [Keske] Flemming and children Minnie, Gusta, Anna, and August arrived in Detroit from Germany. The next day, on the 20th, their daughter Mary was born. They arrived in America on the ship Madgeline on May 14, 1872.
"Henry and his family came North and settled in Belknap [Twp.], where they cleared land and built their home. Henry, Jr., was born on this farm. Lumbering was the main income at that time. A [railroad] track, running about 1 1/4 miles west of Metz [called South Rogers] was built to get the large logs and take them elsewhere to make into lumber. [This place was within a quarter of a mile from their farm.]
"Henry also had other jobs. One he had was driving the mail coach from Metz to Rogers City before the train went to Rogers City.
"Henry was a guy who liked to play cards and taught the men folks in the area a card game he brought with him from Germany - Spitzer. He even went to Hawks, Rogers City, and Alpena to teach the game to anyone who wanted to learn it.
"Henry died a young man [age 70] from cancer [in 1909]. Henry, Jr., took over the family farm. In 1916 Henry, Jr., and family moved to Rogers City. His sister Mary, who was married and living in Alpena with her husband Fred Mielke and their family, just would not let the family farm go out of the family. So their family moved and took over that farm then."

"[He] began a farm by home steading in Belknap Township, just a short ways down the road from a rail road logging station where logs were shipped by rail to other parts of the state and country. This location was known as the South Rogers corner. The railroad tracks were later extended east and north of South Rogers and went through the center of the Flemming farm."
