- Notes:
First record of communion at Grace Lutheran, Ripon, Wisconsin: 17 Aug 1873 (as "Neuenfeldt and wife"). Source: Grace Lutheran Church records (Primary Enclosure File #65)
After her husband died, she moved in with her son Fred & his wife, at their home on S. Grove St., Ripon, Wisconsin. Source: Samuel Pedrick Papers (Primary Enclosure File #66) Note that the address on her death certificate (1928) and Fred's address on the 1930 census do not exactly match: 806 vs. 826. It's possible they moved, and it's possible there's a typo or mistranscription involved.
"She and her husband were the first of this Flemming family to arrive in America. At age 26, she and her husband arrived in New York on April 16 1869 on the ship America (Germans to America, Vol. 22, page 286) from Bremen. The ship log listed them as coming from Pomerania. They settled on a farm in Ripon, Wisconsin.
"In the 1900 Census she was listed as having 6 children, 3 of which were living. [1900 Federal Census, Wisconsin, Fond du Lac, Ripon Twp.; ED 43, Sheet 8A; entry 161 163.] In the 1910 Census she was listed as having 7 children, 3 still living. [1910 Federal Census, Wisconsin, Fond du Lac, Ripon; Ward 4; ED 74, Sheet 16B; entry 367 345.] Four children were reported as being stillborn or having died in infancy.
"Her mother, also named Johanna (Flemming), moved from Detroit, where she arrived from Germany with her oldest son in 1870, to live with her daughter in Ripon, Wisconsin. It is unknown when she moved to Ripon, but she lived there with her daughter until her death in 1894.
"Elmer Schroeder visited Prell's in Michigan in the 1940's. He was from near Appleton, Wisc. Fleming's had cousins named Schroeder in 1940's. It is believed that Schroeder's wife was from the Neuenfeldt family.
"Marion Neuenfeldt is in a Flemming Reunion picture, per Marie Basel. Bonie Basel was sent Neuenfeldt pictures, per Marie, with them and Prell's in the picture."
Source: Fleming Descenants, by Walt Hempel
[Walt hypothesizes that Marion was a child of Ernest & Johanna, b. abt. 1880, but that would mean Johanna had four living children in 1900 & 1910, rather than the three she reported. Perhaps Marion was Fred's wife's middle name? Perhaps it was Ida's middle name? Perhaps she was Ernest's niece on the Neuenfeldt side? Or perhaps there really was a fourth child who survived into adulthood?]
