- Notes:
1860 Census: Name looks like "John P.", but is actually John E.; compare with the name "Eliza A." three lines down.
1880 Census: Listed as an orphan who "keeps back farm" (previous entry is for George & Lucy Lenhart; he probably was working the back acres of their farm).
[The only other listing for his household in 1920 are two servants who also work at the soft drink stand and the servants' son. Edith Hicks was living in Globe, Gila, Arizona in 1920, though John was listed as married rather than divorced, and Edith was listed as widowed (and born in Texas, and the wrong age).]
Note: Cynthia Moe <cyntut@yahoo.com> April 2000.
John E. and Edith left Wisconsin soon after marriage. "I don't know for sure, but think they went to Arizona before going on to Tillemook, Oregon. When they got to Oregon, I don't know, but they had four children along the way. Two of them died in infancy and I don't have names." I found the family in Tillamook, Ore. 1900, but not in 1910. In 1920 I found John E. in Washington living alone. he told census taker that he was married. I found Edith in Globe Arizona working in a hotel. She said she was a widow. She also said that she was from Texas, but I thought that was to confuse things, everything else matched. So I figure she left John in a huff."
