- Notes:
Aretus Belding b. 1796 d. 21 June 1838 married Maria Fordham 24 July 1820.
The following came from "a direct and complete quote from page 395 of Craft's
History of Whately, MA" by way of a letter from Joanne Rohrscheib.
David, son of Elisha born a Whatley 2 May 1769 married l June 1793 Content
Farnum, rem early from town. Have the dates of only two of their three
children born in Whately: Dennis, baptized at Whately 31 Aug 1794: Aretus,
baptized at Whately 29 November 1796 and David Jr., no dates.
The letter also gave the following information:
David was descended form Stephen Belding who was born in England and came
first to Weathersfield, Connecticut. In addition Crafts doesn't give the
parents of Content Farnum, nor were they a Whately family. I believe they
originated in Andover. I believe that Crafts is authoritative. He was
working directly from the town vital records." The letter was sent to Joanne
by way of Gay and Tim Wall from Dereka Smith on request of a Franklin County
MA lookup.
Letter from Hope Broiles to Shirley Aaron dated May 7 1988. "David died
circa 1813 in Randolph, Orange Co. Vt. I have his probate dated 3 June
1813". This letter also states that the children, Aretus, David Jr., and
Heman were all born in Whately Massachusetts but their births are registered
in Tunbridge, Vermont. (I am trying to verify this).

Erastus Belden and Aretus Belding are not the same person. Aretus (b. 1795) died in 1838 and his son Heman was enumerated as the head of the family in the 1840 census; Erastus (b. 1800) was still alive at that point and was enumerated elsewhere in New York in the 1840 Census.
