WILLIAM OLIVER TUTTLE
For fifty-three years W. O. Tuttle has been a resident of Arizona and During the greater part of that period has been actively identified with Indian agency affairs. During the past twenty-five years he has conducted a trading post, in which he has met with very satisfactory success. Mr. Tuttle was born in Pepin County, Wisconsin on the 1st day of August 1861. He is a son of Samuel and Emma Agnes (Sibley) Tuttle, the former of whom was killed in battle during the Civil War, in which he served as a member of the Sixteenth Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. W. O. Tuttle was educated in the public schools of his native state, and in 1876, when fifteen years of age, he came to Arizona. he drove a team through and was six months on the way. For many years he was employed here as a message carrier and then, in 1891, he went to work for the government as an Indian agency farmer. Later he was detailed as chief of police on an Indian reservation, in which capacity he served until 1905, when he decided to embark on an independent business career. He established a trading post on the San Carlos Indian reservation. Which he carried on until 1913, when he opened a general merchandise store at Fort Thomas. This proved a successful venture and has been carried on to the present time. In 1924 Mr. Tuttle suffered a severe loss in the destruction of his store by fire. However, he rebuilt and opened for business again in the following year and now commands a large and prosperous business.
In November 1888, Mr. Tuttle was united in marriage to Miss Jane Tague, of Fort Thomas and they are the parents of twelve children, of whom four are living. Mr. Tuttle married (2d) April 1929, Mary Smithee of Texas. In his political affiliation Mr. Tuttle is a Republican and served as a member of the county central committee in 1912 and from 1916 to the present time. he belongs to Globe Lodge No. 489, B.P.O.E. and is a very popular member of the circles in which he moves, while his business record has gained for him the uniform confidence and respect of those who patronize him.

Dec. 27, 1921, No Name of paper given
Deputy Sheriff Wight and Kinsey and Policeman Tuttle broke up a "tulapia" party in the arroya south of town and dashed the hopes of a group of Apache bucks and their squaws who had counted on an old time celebration.
NO name or date of paper given
Deputy Sheriff William E. Tuttle returned late yesterday afternoon with a Mexican woodchopper whose feet are frozen so badly that he may lose both of them. Tuttle brought the man in from the mountains near Chrysotile where there was 20 inches of snow on the ground. Tuttle recited a story of deep snow, intense cold, slippery roads and a night spent in a closed car before a tractor finally plowed its way to the rescue.
Deadwatch---Ft. Thomas, text by John B. Prescott
Deadwatch. After 74 years, the dead alone remain, still keeping post on the high ground above the Gila Valley floor; looking north toward the breaks and canyons of the Gila mountains, whence at times the Apaches came with lance and arrow and fire.
Founded in August of 1876, Thomas was designed to give protection to the swelling tide of travel over the great Gila River highway. The initial garrison comprised units of the 8th Infantry and 6th Cavalry, to be followed by various elements of the 12th Cavalry, 3rd Cavalry, 24th Infantry, 1st Infantry and others.
For 16 years the post maintained its vigil on the mesa, while below passed the westering emigrants; prospectors, land seekers, forturne hunters, bad men and good. It lent a military presence to the silver strikes at Superior and Glove. It weathered the Coyotero outbreak of 1881. Its troops were active in the long and bloody siege of nerves now sometimes called the Gernonimo "disturbance."
Many a scout and reconnaissance passed through its gates by night, some to return, others not.
By December of 1892 the frontier was gone and in common with many other forts, outposts and camps, Thomas was abandoned. Soon it frames and timbers disappeared, perhaps to serve the early generation of farmers and ranchers in the valley; its adobe walls began to sink back into the earth from which they had risen.
Today, back a quarter mile from the modern highway, only the graveyard is left, the headstones and monuments deep in greasewood. Among those still legible, there appears to have been a high incidence of young women and children; and it is known that typhoid fever and malaria were more lethal than hostile Indian action.
One couple, Jane and William Tuttle, trudged five times up the ridge in 13 years; each time burdened with a child; each child an installment on the price of settlement.
