Reading List of X-Men Graphic Novels
X-Men reprint collections and graphic novels in story order

Last updated: 22 May 2003

Here's a draft at a reading list; it's not 100% exhaustive, but it's close as far as TPBs reprinting the main continuity are concerned. Given how massive the main continuity is and how nebulous the placement within that continuity of mini-series and GNs can be, I've left those on their own for now. Likewise the volumes that essentialy reprint random issues.

There are three competing forces at work in the creation of this list: whether to list books in the order the stories were originally published, whether to list books purely chronologically by order of occurrence, or whether to list books in the order in which they should be read (which, due to flashbacks, flashforwards, and time travel, may not necessarily be the same as either of the other two). Because a single collection may include stories set all over the timeline, but some sense of story order is important, I have not exclusively followed any one of those three approaches, but rather have tried to use the approach that seems appropriate for each situation and compromise when necessary. When in doubt, I used the order the stories were originally published as the default.

Other resources:
If you want a more detailed view of the full timeline of X-Men stories, see the Chronology FAQ ("list") and Continuity of the X-Titles ("graph"). If you want a full list of every place X-Men comics have been reprinted in any form, see Ken Arromdee's X-Men Reprint List. If you want a full list of every story in which a particular character has appeared, in the order the stories are supposed to take place, see the Marvel Chronology Project,

Note that anthologies or books that reprint crossovers between series may be listed in multiple places.

Main X-Men Continuity
Uncanny X-Men and X-Men, vol. 2 were essentially a semimonthly series with two titles for a long time; thus, they are listed together. Since it involved a title change and a break from this "tight continuity," New X-Men is in its own category. New Mutants and X-Factor frequently crossed paths with Uncanny X-Men, but since they were largely separate, they are also in their own categories.

New Mutants/X-Force
After many years of just Uncanny X-Men, Marvel decided to start a new series about the next generation of mutants, going to school at Xavier's in order to learn to cope in a world that hates & fears them. After issue 100, the series was retitled to X-Force, to reflect the character's change from students to a proactive mutant strike force.

After issue #115, X-Force was effectively cancelled. As part of the reorganization of the entire X-Men line that led to New X-Men and X-Treme X-Men, Marvel decided to keep publishing the series with an entirely new cast of characters. After #129, this series retitled X-Statix.

X-Factor
In the mid-1980's, Marvel reunited the original X-Men--raising Jean Grey/Phoenix from the dead in the process--and gave them their own series. After issue #70, the "old" team was shifted over into Uncanny X-Men and X-Men, vol. 2, and new characters took their place in X-Factor.

Excalibur

After the Mutant Massacre (see the volume of that name), Kitty Pryde, Nightcrawler, and Rachel Summers were sent to England to recuperate from their injuries; while there, they teamed up with Captain Britain to form Excalibur, a European X-Men team of sorts. One reason Excalibur has so many "graphic novels" is that for several years Marvel published squarebound graphic novels instead of numbered "annuals" for the Excalibur series

Wolverine

The man with the retractable "claws" and bad attitude is the best at what he does, and what he does is get lots of comics written featuring himself. One reason Wolverine has so many "graphic novels"--besides the character's strong popularity--is that for several years, Marvel published squarebound graphic novels instead of numbered "annuals" for the Wolverine series.

Alternate Universes

Age of Apocalypse

For four months in 1994, all of the X-Men series changed names and told stories about life in an alternate timeline wherein Professor Xavier had been killed before forming the X-Men. After four months, the series all switched back to their normal titles and told stories in the normal timeline.

Ultimate X-Men
In an attempt to publish stories that could be enjoyed without having read everything Marvel has published since 1961, Marvel started the "Ultimate" line of comics. The writers of these stories started from scratch, creating new characters with similar names & powers to existing Marvel characters and writing whatever stories they wanted to write without having to pay any attention to how those characters act & interact in the "standard" Marvel universe.

Exiles
After the Age of Apocalypse ended, one of the fans' favorite "new" characters was Blink. Marvel decided to give her her own series, one with a similar premise to Quantum Leap: a team of mutants, led by Blink, bounces from alternate timeline to alternate timeline, trying to "fix" events that "went wrong."

X-Men Adventures
In the early 1990's, Fox aired the first X-Men cartoon series. In an attempt to compete with DC's popular Batman Adventures comic books, Marvel started a comic book series loosely based on the X-Men cartoon, with more "cartoony" artwork than the regular X-Men series.
