Named for Suicide Squid, a fictitious character created when someone mistyped that for Suicide Squad and the newsgroup readers decided to pretend there really was a comic book character named "Suicide Squid." Originally titled "The Great Usenet Comics Poll", then "The Rec.arts.comics Award Poll" after the newsgroup was renamed from net.comics to rec.arts.comics. The awards are for work done during the indicated year.
